Mid-Atlantic grocer extends reach of same-day service
After an initial launch earlier this month, Weis Markets Inc. is expanding online grocery delivery with Shipt to more than a dozen new metropolitan markets.
Starting on Oct. 11, Shipt same-day delivery will be available from Weis stores in Chambersburg, Frederick, Hagerstown and St. Mary’s Peninsula, Md.; East Brunswick, Hackettstown, Mercer County and Morristown, N.J.; Binghamton, N.Y.; Reading, State College, Stroudsburg, Sunbury, Williamsport and York, Pa.; and Washington, D.C.
“We are steadily expanding our Shipt partnership to all of our markets,” Ron Bonacci, vice president of advertising and marketing at Sunbury-based Weis Markets, said in a statement. “Ultimately, we are offering our customers more choices and convenience with online ordering through our Shipt partnership. We expect this to grow and complement our in-store offering.”
With the expansion, almost 2 million households across the four states and the District of Columbia will get access to online grocery shopping and delivery via Weis supermarkets. Birmingham, Ala.-based Shipt said it plans to add about 400 personal shoppers in these metro markets to help pick, bag and deliver orders of groceries and other staple items, which can arrive at customers’ doors in as soon as an hour.
“Now, more East Coast families than ever can take advantage of personalized delivery of their favorite Weis products,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO of Shipt, which is part of Target Corp.
Weis kicked off its partnership with Shipt on Sept. 6, when same-day delivery got under way in Allentown, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Lewes, Millsboro, Millville and Rehoboth Beach, Del.; and Baltimore. That launch also represented Shipt’s debut in Delaware.
In addition, Weis offers a click-and-collect grocery service called Weis 2 Go, with pickup available at approximately 90 stores. The retailer operates 204 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, West Virginia and Virginia.
