Subway Canada to Eliminate Plastic Straws by 2019

TORONTO — Subway Canada has announced plans to eliminate plastic straws at 3,200 of its restaurants across the country. The chain will transition to paper straws by the end of 2019.
“We are always working to improve the sustainability of our products and operations and the brand’s efforts to-date have prevented millions of pounds of packaging from entering the global waste stream,” says Elizabeth Thom, a consultant at Veritas Communications, representing Subway Canada. “Our goal is to be the number-1 corporate citizen in every market we serve.”
This move is just the latest in a series of plans the company has undertaken to be more environmentally responsible. Over the last decade, Subway has been designing its restaurants to maximize energy efficiency and water conversation.
The company is also changing its packaging to be 100-per-cent recyclable, compostable and manufactured from sustainably sourced materials. The brand also plans on reducing its packaging’s carbon impact through “minimalist design and material choice based on sound science.”
